Pan Shots from Hayao Miyazaki’s Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro (1979)

quillheart

Interestingly enough, they say in the film that Cagliostro only has 3,500 people.  The city in the ending scene (seen here in this set), that Lupin and Jigen are running toward that sits on the body of water, has far more people than that, so I’ve always thought that it isn’t part of the principality, but next door.  Thus, we’re seeing them run toward freedom, since Zenigata probably doesn’t have permission to pursue him in that country.

Also, check out all the lovely sun/moon motifs here! <3

I always figured the city wasn’t part of Cagliostro either. In fact, the fact that the final shot is a decidedly modern cityscape always had me thinking this was Miyazaki telling his audience Lupin is returning to the status quo world of international crime. The detour into his past and the (well, superficially) fairy tale world of Cagliostro is over.
